Description

Rue Housing

An analysis of the site revealed a series of city blocks which are anchored by large buildings on the main streets of Rue Saint-Catherine and Boulevard Rene-Lévesque. Looking at a single block the buildings fragment and reduce is scale moving inwards from either anchor, and in most cases reveal a void in the middle, which is now mostly used for parking. Although service lanes split each block into segments, it was observed that the parking voids became the choice of many people crossing from one block to another. This idea of an informal connection of several blocks became the spine for the design, and with it the exploration of how social housing could help integrate the integrity of the surrounding architecture with private and a new public vein throughout the area. Looking at precedents such as Prince Arthur street in Montreal which ends at the public St. Louis Square, a strategy of creating a pedestrian street beginning at Dominion Park was established. The pedestrian street would help to provide a new type of weaving public space throughout the area which would increase the potential of commercial activity, the appropriate density of the blocks, and provide recreational areas in order to supplement the social housing. It is an architecture that is both inwards and outwards. The pedestrian street would connect the park to the three blocks just south west of it.

Phase 1
The architecture which would begin to minimally suggest the idea of the pedestrian street would be dealt with first. Rue Cypress would become a pedestrian hybrid street with large planters separating a now one way traffic system from the walking area. The surface treatment of the road would be consistent and the blurring of car to people circulation is created. Along block two, ( between Rue Stanley and Rue Drummond) surface treatment would also mark the change, with a low wall being built against the existing parking garage to the East, and ramps, light posts, and stairs creating a variety of spaces to sit, gather, and occupy. Along block three (between Rue Drummond and Rue de la Montagne) a public square would be created consisting of a sunken area which could be used for sports, and in the winter could be turned into an ice rink. A projector would also be installed which would project movies on the blank wall of an existing building at night time. The pedestrian street is now anchored by two public spaces, one soft, one hard.

Phase 2
At this point the pedestrian street would be reinforced with the building of a commercial residential building along block 1 and elevated art studios and commercial along block 2. The axis would be strengthened and more human scale spaces would be created such as the underneath of the studios where a market like situation could occur. Behind this new “wall” of architecture the existing parking would be transferred to below ground in preparation for the third phase. The idea here is to create a buffer between the public and soon to be private space of the new housing.

Phase 3
Now that all support elements are in place the residential is built infilling the prior voids in the single blocks. On block 1 a reinterpretation of the typical Montreal house involves moving the “hanger” typology to the street front as three story commercial towers separate a public/private buffer to the residential behind. This allows for maintained urban relief, and creates an interesting setback condition of a shared communal space in the front of house. On block 2 the commercial remains on ground level but the residential homes ”zipper” in plan and section creating spaces below and above the building for privacy. A sense of individuality is also established. In the back a shared communal garden is informed by a daycare center, greenhouses and a water tower. The idea of providing the support programmatic devices allows for a more successful integration into the city.
