Description

The St. Lawrence Market has been a focal point of community life in the City of Toronto for over 200 years and for much of that period has encompassed two market structures separated by Front Street – a South Market building, which from 1845 to the end of that century was integrated with the Town Hall, and a separate North Market building, which, while being the previous site of the Town Hall (1831-1845), had been, since the mid-19th century until 1967, closely associated with St. Lawrence Hall.

The urban grid in this neighbourhood was discovered to be uniquely interesting. Strong grid alignment, grid transitions and play of angle all occur in and around the two market buildings. These misalignments allow for unique views of the market area. The market precinct now has the basic components of edge definition, entry and center.

The Market has been developed as a strong simple form, with mass and simplicity. The mass of the building is juxtaposed against a conscious desire for porosity at the ground level to reveal the volume of the Market Hall within. The green house or conservatory form above affirms the visual connection to the South market while lightening the roof lines and providing natural light to the municipal courts facilities.
Our approach to the environmental design of the building cornes from the ethos within our design studio to commit to the responsible design of a building that is inherently sus¬tainable in the operation of building systems that function synthetically at bath active and passive levels. A response to the one's context demands the optimization and orientation of program to the appropriate quality of air and light.

The building's interior is a naturally ventilated space. The market space is completely open on both the East and West elevations. Three position market sashes are easily adjusted to respond to daily climate change. The atrium utilizes a thermal chimney for ventilation. The curved roof forms are also ventilated. Prevailing winds are utilized to the fullest extent possible by these three strategies.

As the façade echoes that of the South Market the north elevation attempts to respond to the land-mark St. Lawrence Hall directly to the north while remaining firmly integrated into the total compo¬sition (rather than disparate halves). Thus the curved upper side walls are `stopped' by the ziggurat of the rear wall its form in part dictated by the required angle step back (44 degrees) from St. Lawrence Hall to allow sunlight to the upper wall at the rear of the building.

Like markets world-wide, the St. Lawrence Market exists to facilitate the sale of basic human needs. Just as weekly market days are an essential feature of life in villages and town squares throughout the world, the St. Lawrence market site has evolved through a long history of such market activity. The proposed new development is part of this evolution and seeks to strengthen and enhance market precinct activities. The strong visual relationship that exists between the North and South market buildings will be both reinforced and revitalized, making the Market Precinct a cohesive and well defined district.
