Description

The proposal involves decommissioning the Georgia viaduct and dedicating it entirely to the pedestrian. This will provide a continuous link from Main Street to BC Place in the form of a linear park. A grid structure will run below both viaducts in which pod units can be inserted. The flexibility of the pods allows for a number of uses from start-up businesses to community gathering space.

CONNECTIVITY - Currently, east-west pedestrian access through the site poses many challenges. We propose decommissioning the Georgia viaduct and dedi-cating it entirely to the pedestrian. This will provide a continuous link from Main Street to BC Place in the form of a linear park. The porous structure proposed at ground level allows for pedestrian and cyclist traffic to filter through in a north-south direction connecting Andy Livingstone Park with the proposed Creekside Park.

COLLECTIVITY - We propose a grid structure running below both viaducts in to which pod units can be inserted. These pods can fulfil a number of uses. The majority would be dedicated to start-up businesses with a priority those with green credentials. A portion of the pods would be occupied by established small busi¬nesses who would provide a constant vibrancy to the fluid nature of the structure. The flexible base grid structure allows for a gradual organic habitation of the site which would be sustainable. The design of the pods would allow for multiple units to be joined both horizontally and vertically. This would allow for the creation of larger units to provide collective flexible work spaces for entrepreneurs who do not have the resources for their own pod. A similar principle is proposed for the east end of the site where multiple pods are arranged to form community gathering space.

Each pod would have its own individual character with the polycarbonate skins allowing for infinite graphic possibilities. The surrounding communities would be in¬vited to contribute to this process. Local schools, artists and community groups would take ownership of different pod skins providing the area with a legibility and sense of place. The park at ground between the viaducts can be glimpsed through the structure inviting one into explore. This park is shielded from the traffic on Pacific Boulevard to the south by a more dense arrangement of pods under the Georgia Viaduct together with the planting in the linear park above. The traffic on the Dunsmuir Viaduct to the north of the park is obscured by the linear arrangement of solar panels to its south face which also provide energy for the new units.
