Description

A strong link is created from the proposed new masterplan, to the new parkland, and beyond to downtown. A covered pedestrian street connects Main St, through to a large hall with park either side, and on to a large plaza which leads people to the Rogers Arena and downtown beyond. This ‘galleria' slopes down underneath the sky train and Expo Boulevard and incorporates small retail units built below the viaducts.

Sustainable Lifestyle Expo, Covered Shopping Street and New Home for the Flea Market

We wanted to retain as much of the functioning infrastructure as possible while greatly enhancing the area for pedestrians. The Gins is to create a strong link from the proposed new masterplan area, to the new parkland, and beyond to the city's downtown. A covered pedestrian or'galleria' connects a plaza at Main St, through to a large hall with parkland either side, and on to a larger plaza which leads people to the Rogers Arena and downtown beyond. This 'galleria' slopes down underneath the sky train and Expo Boulevard and incorporates small retail units built below the viaducts.

To help Vancouver achieve its target of the must sustainable city by 2020, an important issue to address is the lifestyle and attitude of its citizens. This is accomplished in the project via interactive exhibitions both temporary and permanent; to entertain and educate the visitors, encouraging them to reduce the amount of energy they consume and to change the source of that energy. The project seeks to create an attractive place in the city where these ideas can be communicated, thereby making an impact city-wide. The city's Flea Market would also be relocated here, from its current location on the proposed masterplan area.

The viaducts become visually absorbed by the new building, reading more as streetscape than inhuman infrastructure. The building includes a living façade, planted with indigenous vegetation which will absorb toxins, dust and noise from the freeways, while reducing stormwater runoff and the heat island effect. The roof of the galleria is glazed, while the Expo Hall roof is also planted heavily, and these combine to create an interesting topography for the users of the viaducts. Further active sustainable systems (piezoelectric etc) could be implemented to fully integrate this project into the environmental, social and built context of Vancouver.
