Description

This project takes the observer across the country through text and drawings. Its re-found meaning is made utterly perplexing by a collage of documents: history textbooks, contemporary art reviews, archival photographs, the actual site, and commentaries.

The pavilion lies at anchor in the Grand Canal, opposite Piazza San Marco, as the point of departure for an unfinished journey toward a utilitarian America with origins in the technological innovations of Renaissance Europe.

A footbridge, with abruptly ending tracks that leads to the immobile pavilion, symbolizes the moment of zero growth. The crossing of the screen, stretched tightly like a sail or a veil, directly delivers the official image of Canada to the crowd gathered on the Piazzetta, and reveals its hidden face.

The form of the container/bridge imposes itself on a Canada with virtual borders and an elusive memory. The structure is inspired both by the Victoria bridge, quintessential symbol of Canadian territorial aspirations, and by the container, symbolizing interchangeable contents, exile and uprooting.

This manifestation of the strangeness and brutality of daily life builds on the experiments of the Dadaists, Duchamp, the Situationists, and contemporary Canadian artists like Melvin Charney, Robin Collyer, and Jeff Wall.
