Description

In response to the competition launched by the city of Châteauguay, the T.A.G. studio in association with Jodoin, Lamarre, Pratte et Associés proposed a two-faceted relationship with the landscape. Located parallel to, but set back from, the street, the library is signed by a facade on the street with an opaque character created by a fieldstone wall "...like a raised stone...", which links the building with the heritage quality of the city of Châteauguay. The facade on the park side was instead developed in transparency thanks to which one can appreciate the vertical storage of the collection like a real show: "The vertical plane of books thus exposed becomes the background of the natural amphitheatre of the park". The site has been treated as a series of green corridors between the buildings on which the parking lots are inserted. The "cabinet of books", as the competitors describe the library, thus becomes the focal point of the site. The jury appreciated the compactness of the project in relation to the site and the quality of the exterior and interior spaces created as a result. The improvements to be made in the second phase of the competition were only functional.
