Public space is for people; reclaiming Newton town centre
This design endeavours to encourage citizen participation, at multiple tiers, in the creation, occupation and perpetual manipulation of public space in Newton Town Centre with the goal of shaping viable and inclusive public spaces that act as catalysts for community pride and empowerment.
The design consists of temporary studios that encrust the blank walls of the arena. The studios are opportunities for micro-economies and a mechanism for the reclamation of space through their night use, diversity and spill out into the square.
Iconic light globes are strung on a grid of cables above the most public spaces and can be unclipped and moved to suit use.
The red stage functions as a front porch, grand entrance to Newton Town Centre, and permeation of the cedar grove. Thus it facilitates movement between 72nd Street and the town centre, signifying the cedar grove as public.
The poppy plaza and memorial orchard are oriented to the War Memorial and provide space to remember loved ones lost in conflict
These overlapping spaces provide vibrant and dynamic places for elderly people and youth to feel comfortable, to celebrate, to interact, and to reclaim their community Newton Town Centre is a walkable, attractive and exciting place to live and visit.
Housing in Newton Town Centre is dense and diverse to meet the needs of a variety of residents ranging from small families to elderly individuals Affordable bachelor suites and one bedroom units are closely integrated with 2-3 bedroom units, live-work studios and grander lofts.
