by , published
The Centre Gadbois occupies a paradoxical place in Montréal’s collective imagination. Built in 1960 as part of the city’s democratization of sport , it has since been transformed through incremental additions, surviving the shadow of the Turcot interchange while serving generations of athletes and citizens. As Montréal reimagined this emblematic facility, the design competition for its renovation and partial reconstruction became more than a technical exercise: it was an inquiry into how memory, landscape, and community can be rewoven into the very fabric of architecture. Thus, the new centre Gadbois would display the heritage elements of the original building, would integrate with the surrounding urban fabric, and would provide the community with improved access to sports and recreation. Milan Design Loft is an interior design competition set in the heart of Città Studi, one of Milan's most vibrant academic districts and home to the Politecnico di Milano. The competition focuses on the renovation of a loft, characterised by double-height spaces, generous natural light and a strong spatial identity. Participants are invited to completely rethink the apartment, imagining a contemporary living space designed for an architecture student. The challenge goes beyond aesthetic choices, encouraging designers to reflect on daily routines such as studying, working in groups, resting and socialising.
MASS TIMBER INNOVATION AND DESIGN CENTER
Canada
Registration deadline:
June 20, 2026
Submission deadline:
June 21, 2026
The competition seeks a public-facing hub where timber innovation is clear and inviting. A legible entry leads to a hands-on Discovery Lab, auditorium, café, and materials store, with trail-edge restrooms for park users. A central Timber Gallery anchors the visit through full-scale mockups and life-cycle storytelling. Behind the scenes, create a flexible making ecosystem: research labs, tool-safe maker studios, and digital fabrication (CNC, laser, robotics) organized around a double-height assembly hall with crane access for 1:1 prototyping. Support spaces--offices, loading, timber storage--connect to outdoor yards, green infrastructure, and trail links, with a covered prototype canopy and outdoor classrooms.
