This single-phase architectural competition by invitation for the Théâtre des Deux Rives was launched in 2003 by the Société pour la promotion d'événements culturels du Haut-Richelieu. The intention of this contest was to renovate and expand this theatre in order that it may affirm its cultural role within the region.
The Théâtre des Deux Rives is housed in the east wing of the Cégep de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu - a building constructed in 1968, that permitted the alliance of three regional academic institutions; the Séminaire de Saint-Jean, l'École des Métiers de Saint-Jean and l'École d'infirmières de l'Hôpital de Saint-Jean.
This competition was to serve as a means to rethink the entire design and organization of the Théâtre des Deux Rives. A particular effort would be required to reinforce the visual identity and functional autonomy of the theatre with respect to the Cégep de Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The selected team of professionals had to reassess the existing configuration, architecture, as well as the interior finishes of the theatre. This would also need to be complementary with significant retrofitting and modernization of the building's technical spaces, reception hall and public services.
