Launched by the Théâtre de la Bordée in 2000, this competition was related to the construction of a new complex that would include a 350-seat performance hall, a practice hall, administrative and all required technical spaces. The Théâtre de la Bordée, a company devoted to the production and diffusion of popular theatrical performances, was to be relocated to the Saint-Roch district of Lower Québec City. This neighbourhood was in the midst of a significant revitalization, due mainly to the important influx of artists and the presence of the École des arts visuels de l'Université Laval.
The competition programme for the Théâtre de la Bordée indicated several requests concerning the architectural concept that the architects were to apply to the new building. They desired that the "Saint-Joseph Street façade be largely fenestrated, offering views of a welcoming and dynamic entrance hall achieved by its volume, lighting and warmth, to passers-by." In addition, they required a large exterior billing space and desired that the theatre's exterior signage be an integral concern of the architects.
