The Société de la Place des Arts opened this architectural competition aimed at exterior identification of the building and societies contained within, in September of 2001. The objective was to design signage elements in order to facilitate recognition of the Saint-Catherine Street entrance of this performing arts complex. The new exterior signage was also to identify the various tenants of the interior commercial area as well as resident performance companies and different events organized by the Société de la Place des Arts.
This single-phase competition by invitation, permitted projects by Atelier Big City, Dupuis Le Tourneux and Hal Ingberg to be developed to a preliminary state. Formation of multidisciplinary teams, under the direction of an architect, was strongly encouraged as the signage and architectural identification called upon the expertise of several disciplines such as; industrial, graphic and exhibition designers and artists.
Atelier Big City, associated with Studio Maurice Cloutier Designers and the artist Andrew Foster, were the winning team of this competition. Their project consisted of a translucent blue glass information wall surmounted by a luminous glass marquee. Their scheme, however, was unfortunately not constructed.
