Description

4 general objectives :
- Respect the Fabrique's desire to preserve the general image of the church;
- Identify development strategies that both provide additional space and enhance the spatial experience suggested by the original volumetry;
- Do not restrict the proposal to a single use scenario, but rather suggest various ways of inhabiting the additional space;
- To propose an architectural party that can naturally be implemented in successive phases and within reasonable budgets.

4 features define the essence of the proposal:
- The preservation and consolidation of the historic masonry;
- A large gable roof with laminated wood trusses covers the entire volume (phase 1). Alternating panels of clear, translucent glass and opaque spandrel, this roof considerably increases the amount of natural light without having to frequently pierce the preserved stone envelope;
- A wooden nave is then inserted into the volume of the church (phases 1 and 2). Seemingly suspended above the continuous floor slab, this precious trunk with acoustic properties defines the place of worship and the multifunctional room;
- Finally a series of circular trays are erected in the former apse (phase 2). This rental choir responds to the Fabrique's desire to accommodate new functions within the building.

The interface between the nave and the choir is where the shared circulation of the functions takes place: it is the community transept. A new entrance canopy, a glass intervention delicately affixed against the eastern projection of the transept, underlines the reallocation of the church and allows the new uses to be identified. This entrance is extended on the parking side by a planted walkway. On Eardley Road, the ceremonial portal is maintained for liturgical celebrations.

On the floors, the circulations between nave and choir are treated as so many footbridges launched above the void
of the community transept. Thus the uses are for the most part detached from the walls of the enclosure. The natural light that filters through the glazed roof underlines the weightlessness of the suspended volumes. This device thus makes it possible to maintain a strolling without obstacle to the perimeter (for the Way of the Cross in particular)

At the southern end of the wooden nave, a stepped rood screen increases the capacity of the room. A removable wall allows it to be used as an independent amphitheater (about 100 seats).

Above the nave, under the glazed roof, the attic space is reinvested, reversing the typical arrangement of a church hall in the basement; here it enjoys a new luminosity. The existing basements are used for services and mechanical rooms. From the attic (phase 2), one has access to the bell tower which becomes a belvedere on the city.
