Description

Human Space: Density for Community and the Socio-Ecological Neighborhood

The current model of detached home ownership in residential neighbourhoods, with its dominant program of individualism, investment, and privacy, continues to prohibit the need for integrated affordable housing and has resulted in significant environmental damage. This project considers how local human networks and new models of ownership might contribute to the ecologically responsible city. It proposes community-centered, performance-based lot patterns and housing types, organized around shared energy and resources.

Evolution: The Neighbourhood Formally Known as Single-Family

The City of Vancouver has phased out the single-family lot designation allowing RS-1 and RS-5 lots to accommodate 3 living units - primary, secondary basement, and laneway. This project imagines the future evolution of these neighborhoods where current zoning has left off. With Vancouver's current turnover rate of new housing stock - one house per block, per year - within roughly 30 years over 70% of Vancouver's surface area could be significantly redeveloped.
