SITE: QUEBEC

Social Topography

Juxtaposed to the principal central neighbourhoods, the Côte de la Pente douce site interacts with numerous heteroclite factions of the urban fabric. The uneven terrain of approximately 25 meters that separates the north and south neighbourhoods are home to three bands of distinctive housing in which the interstices stimulate a dynamic living space created by the stairs, landings, ramps and yards. The vertical flux is capped by a public square which is stuffed with children's activities and which links the cliff-side units to the adjacent complex on Charest Boulevard.

The housing units are divided into four typologies adapted to various needs and in which the flexibility of the space leaves room for future divisions. The relationship to the exterior is expressed by a multitude of balconies, loggias and landings that create dynamic facades.

Simple, the system of construction consists of a repetition of prefabricated panels with a single exterior finish. The expanded use of wood planks diminishes the cost of labour and emphasizes a material used in abundance during the expansion of the suburb.

Social housing is inscribed in the logic of the landscape as much by the view it generates, as by the ideology that it makes implicit. The addition of roof gardens integrates it into the cliff, a cliff that is tamed and metamorphosed into an urban threshold.
