Géographie du paradis
The concept of blend1ng, 50 pervasive in the cultural history (Metis), the brackish mixed waters of the St. Lawrence, and the temperate-boreal patchwork of this territory inspired this project of a "contemporary paradise" as a place composed of a mixture of distinct elements, as in a mosaic.
The concept of blending is pervasive in the environmental and cultural history of the St. Lawrence south shore. The brackish waters of the St. Lawrence, the mixture of Peoples embodied in Metis communities and the temperate-boreal patchwork of forests and wetlands across the landscape inspired this object of paradise as a mosaic. Our objective is to evoke the primordial landscape of the south shore in which dominating forests intermingle with tracts of peatland.
The floor of the garden room will be covered by a low lying mixture of easily-grown masses. This carpet will be studded with sunken ponds housing typical herbaceous and shrubby peatland species, creating a variety of natural green levels. Because peatland vegetation is very delicate, visitors of this "contemporary paradise" would be requested to walk on a wooden boardwalk, just as researchers do when they explore this fragile environment.
Along the boardwalk the visitor would experience a stereoscopic concept of paradise narrated by a selection of evocative Iconic images. The images in the stereoscopic viewer will convey different ideas of garden-paradise which different interpretations of garden as paradise through cultural and geographical time and space. Some Images could include the arabic oasis paradise, the '400 Italian garden, or the medieval hortus conclusus. Visitors will also be encourage to interact with the garden by borrowing one of the magnifying glasses provided to examine the tiny paradises of smaller plants as they explore.
