Compost Cemetary (Funeral for Flowers)
The Compost Cemetary is designed as a moment from a dreamlike, distant landscape. On approaching the garden, the visitor walks along the cemetary gate to see a framed sectional cut of a compost pit, demonstrating alternating layers of flowers and organic material.
The cemetary gates lead to a path in a valley of graves for flowers, each stone memorializing the symbolic uses that had been inscribed upon the flowers during their lifespans. The stones are cast with epitaphs.
Several open graves, dedicated to wedding flowers, domestic flowers, apology flowers and domestic flowers, are filled with decomposing bouquets and withering wreaths. As compost pits are filled, new ones are opened.
Funerary Cypresses, long associated with the dead, frame the walk, white stones emerge from a field of cow parsely, white fawn tilles and acan¬thus.
