Photosynthetic
Photosynthetic consists of a series of island ''gardens'', set within a shallow reflecting pool, beneath a light, reflective canopy. Visitors are invited to walk over the reflecting pool on a series of large ''stepping islands.'' The atmosphere of photosynthetic, at once graphic and tactile, is the result of grafting together three landscapes historically associated with ideas of paradise: the island, the oasis and the garden.
In each case, paradise is an aberration, a ''pleasant contrast,'' clearly delineated from its surroundings; the garden within the wilderness (or city), the island within the sea, the oasis within the desert. In addition, each of these possible paradises is both paradisiacal and paradoxical: the island is both retreat from the outside world and a site to be marooned; the oasis is both a shelter from the desert and a mirage; the garden is both a recreation of Eden and eternally its i8mperfect shadow.
Seeking to retain this complexity while offering aesthetic coherence, Photosynthetic interwines the shade of the oasis, the orderly cultivation of the garden, and the insulinarity of the island, reinterpreting each through the merging of organic and synthetic elements. A minimal collection of materials and plantings are used to create an experiential saturation of imagery in which the delicacy and simple coloration of the plantings are framed by the stark, reflective surfaces of the dark pool of silver canopy. Flexible in its configuration and versatile in its scope, photosynthetic is designed to be customized for either the ''grid'' or the ''garden rooms.''
