Sandspace: a site to construct new realities
YEAR 1 The garden-dweller approaches through a perimeter of silver crushed stone in which are distributed 'Elija Blue' (Festuca glauca) grasses on a diagonal grid. Inside this perimeter is a screen of tall sand-loving grass (Elymus Arenarius). One steps upwards into the grasses to enter a massive sandbox full of vibrant, blue sand with hints of magenta and silver. The viewer is pulled out of the everyday world to become part of this magical space. Distributed within the blue sand are a pond and a Boulder, as well as a several silver rakes and buckets. The viewer is beckoned to participate: to play, to meditate, and to imagine.
YEAR 2 As the plant life exhausts itself, it is variously shredded and mixed with the sand-thus becoming another material to manipulate. The initial reading of a blue desert gives way to an enchanted field.
The paradise-moment is not what will be built, but rather the act of constantly imagining experimenting with and making new realities-revelling in the joy that our world is not static but open to improvisation.
