Lavender labyrinth
The concept of paradise takes many forms, but whether its origin is religious or recreational, it is preceded by a journey. If paradise has been lost, then it must be regained - if it is somewhere to be visited, one must find a way to get there.
This proposal examines paradise through the journey to it, using the ancient garden type of the maze. In the past, the maze in the garden was symbolic of the path to heaven, in the context of the ''Jardin de Metis'', the maze will inspire visitors to consider their relationship with the garden and the landscape, as well as the significance of what awaits.
''Paradise'' will be located at the center of the garden, marked by a reflecting pool and ringed by benches where visitors can sit. The circuitous route to this spot will be hemmed by raised beds of lavender, positioned to heighten the sense of the flowers smell, colour and feel.
The effect of the playfully winding path and the intimate experience of the garden will give the visitor pause to consider the significance of the human experience compared to the otherworldly ideal represented by paradise, as well as the potential of the garden to help realize this intensely human fascination.
