Other worldly
Paradise on earth, situated and realized in a garden setting, offers a re¬freshing escape that is both familiar yet fantastically distinct from the everyday. This paradise is brought to life in our project ‘Other Worldly', a garden which is recognizable in its basic characteristics of scent, color, temperature and sensation on the skin, yet free from the explicit sources that produce these properties in our backyard flowerbeds and public parks.
In working with these environmental elements, we use recog¬nizable components of traditional gardens to invent new atmospheric conditions; the bloom scent, spectrums of light and color, temperature, and humidity that are prized components of garden design are still there to provide a sense of familiarity, yet their presence culminates in an otherworldly shape.
Our garden appears as a sheet of translucent crushed glass with various intensities of light and color shining through from below. The glow from underfoot is accompanied by subtle variations in air temperature, humid¬ity, and pockets of scent that are not directly associated with any particu¬lar plant in view, but rather nested pods of vegetative growth dispersed around the site.
The garden space allows for moveable seating, allowing for casual interactions between groups and individuals as they position themselves within the gradient of qualities they find the most appealing.
