As the current redevelopment of former industrial lands around False Creek approaches its final phase, a new urban park that serves the local population and also compliments the physical and social landscape of the city may also influence future designs for public spaces in areas of increasing density. The design I propose applies the principles of an emerging form of urbanism, and is a departure from the model used for previous park spaces. It is an attempt to create a sustainable public space that meets the needs of current citizens and accommodates future uses while maintaining design integrity.
In framing my approach, I laid out key challenges for the intervention. New connections are established to existing elements and amongst the various stages for sculpture, events, and social interaction. Secondly, the design enhances permeability and access along the perimeter.
Thirdly, there is inherent flexibility for the park to evolve with reciprocal changes in the urban environment. An example of this is the grid pattern layout that permits scalable changes to programs and infrastructure. The design also reveals the urban, community, and local scale which are exemplified through the site organization.
This design improves methods of getting to and around the site by various means of transport. It provides infrastructure to support the kinds of use that are already popular (ie. special events), and expands the opportunities for art to be displayed in a public format, while also
activating the waterfront and access to False Creek. Meanwhile, the new elements, including the transit station, expanded pedestrian and cycling paths, floating dock, pedestrian link to the Georgia Viaduct, and other structures within the site, assist in managing the high volumes of visitors anticipated at and around the location.
