city:variables
air of diversity I affordability
'City:variables' offers a variety of spaces that have new potentiaIs for living in the downtown core. I see current architecture is prototyping uses as well as prototyping buildings and forms. Our goal in this project is to negotiate the current dwelling spaces defined by the tower-podium prototype. Most of 'city: variables' proposed spaces are hard to be reduced to descriptions as 'one bedroom' and 'two bedroom' apartments. Instead, they afford a wide range of possibilities for occupation.
As humans are different in their personalities, activities and how they live and interact with others, so have the spaces that accommodate them to be different. The examples we set for 'city: variables' occupants show how our spaces can be owned, rented or even shared. Using these varieties of space occupation allow for more affordable housing because the occupants only use what they need and in the way they want it. It also brings an intriguing mixture of occupants in the building, which accordingly leads to a more vibrant downtown core.
Our design technique uses rule-based procedures to generate complexity out of a simple square floor plate. We applied a series of moving, scaling, and rotating rules that guided the tower's form to growth. The generated form offers unconventional spaces organisations and programs. The square floor plates (now skin and structural steel frames) morphed into slim floor plans at the upper lever to preserve Vancouver's finest views to the mountain. At the lower end of the tower, the steel frames are partially occupied to maintain a social downtown transparency at street level and also saves the visual connections through downtown streets to the water.
We believe our design in 'city:variables' achieves what Vancouver needs most; a more sustainable housing market and life style, new ways ofthinking existing architecture, and a more affordable living.
