A typology cannot be created in a day. One can only be cultivated through use and time, as buildings are added to its canon. Is something inherently flawed about the podium/tower typology?
Vancouver's condominium culture and lifestyle living has focused the building inwards; high fashion interiors that do not echo onto the city. Bing Thom called them "vertical gated communities", they are fetishes. Precipitous development combined with cut and paste architecture has turned the podium/tower typology into a monotype.
My design is successful because it forces interaction. A network of masses reflects the patchwork urban core. It amplifies user activity at street level and encourages communication throughout.
Old Growth Urbanism is a city that is greater than its sum parts. Buildings work together, change use, and grow/shrink dynamically to manifest critical mass; schools coexist with business and restaurants in the same building. They are made beautiful by architects and create an emotional connection with communities, lest we forget, beauty is sustainable.
