NOT MY TYPE
URBAN VESSEL TRANSITIONAL HOUSING FOR NEW IMMIGRANTS AS A SOCIAL CONDENSER AND CONDUIT
Vancouver's zoning has the effect of creating sameness in areas with the interesting and vibrant interactions coming at the edges or seams. We propose a strategy of MICRO-ZONING that at its core is made up only of edges allowing the city to be a true field where difference is promoted through varied use on a block by block basis and within buildings. This model allows the city and its economic, cultural, social and governmental needs to grow and most importantly to introduce friction and complexity into the system generating points of dissemination. MICRO-ZONING is an organic model, which absorbs at any moment the forces that impact its growth but is also evolving and changing itself over the course of multiple life-cycles.
From our strategy of MICRO-ZONING we developed the NOT MY TYPE proposition for the city at the scale of the exurbs, suburbs and downtown. Illustrated here by three strategies; Decrease, Densify and Diversify, NOT MY TYPE operates within the new possibilities of MICRO-ZONING allowing for local conditions and information to develop in each area, block and building. The scheme detailed here shows that NOT MY TYPE is able to exist adjacent to the current podium tower typology and infect it with program while feeding the city by increasing connection with the street, multiple users and action during the course of a day. It also creates a whole new mode of program space that is public and private at the same time and adjusts depending on adjacent uses as it moves between the blocks and city. NOT MY TYPE incorporates housing, offices, recreation area, retail into the space of a block and within each building so that each block is primed to evolve and reflect the local conditions and needs.
