LAND (E) SCAPE
The push for pedestrian friendly streets and high density housing has honorable intent but is in the end is limited. The future is based not on ground vs. tower separation but instead on the integration and cross pollination of landscape, sustainable living and vertical growth. The foundation for this new habitat is already apparent in the city of Vancouver, renowned as a place of diversity, sustainability and cultural heritage. The result is a neighborhood typology acting as a vertical microcosm of the city, linked and sustained by community gardens. These gardens enliven each stepping level by creating an ever changing fac;ade documenting the changing the seasons and times of the day. Through these gardens, neighborhood living pods establish and promote their own identity. In turn, these pods although different are united by the gardens as points of gathering, pride and exchange uniting the group as a whole.
Located on the harbor front this habitat acts as a tuned mechanism for both living and urban agriculture utilizing both wind off the water for power and integrated rain collectors for irrigation and water purification. This site was chosen for its potential to strengthen the waterfront link over the train yard as well as for its high visibility as a prominent place to promote a new standard for sustainable living. The system itself is flexible and can be adapted to support both its inner neighborhoods as well as to strengthen the surrounding city. The future of Vancouver is as simple as a change in mindset: the issue is not living vertically but merely rethinking how we live.
