Aerial Typology for Vancouver
Vancouver Aerial City is achieved by spans of ~1200' with a rectangular elevated support network held together by a structural tensioned net for maximum flexibility and natural light penetration allowing densities of approximately 400 people per acre, mixed-use/residential arrangements. The fundamental limitations of present day planning philosophies lead to two-dimensional cities ignoring the available habitable and potentially exciting 'air space' above cities.
To demonstrate the Aerial City concept for this competition, a rectangular structural framework at a height of 300' and length of 600' with two circulation/support towers at each end is proposed. From and within this structural framework various habitable environments are suspended with unlimited freedom. Aerial plazas and sky walkways add to the coherence and excitement of these environments creating a new urban layer above the city with views rarely experienced. 70% ofthe land in the competition site will be free to become parks, habitat for animals, and functionally integrated with educational and recreational facilities in harmony with nature.
This liberation from traditional city planning and architecture opens the horizon of economic and aesthetic advancement. Aerial City will be a source of urban and aesthetic energy integrating the arts, humanity and nature, symbolically bridging the present and the future. This raised urban network becomes an all-in-one instrument of progress lifting the human spirit.
