LANDSCAPE = INFRASTRUCTURE + ECOLOGY + PUBLIC SPACE
Variable Plaza is a proposal for a public space that integrates infrastructure and ecology into public space. The site faces the emerging Queen's Quay corridor and is designed to absorb pedestrian flows along the street as well as become a feature park along the waterfront network. The design takes advantage of existing parking lots adjacent to the site to create a local masterplan that is dynamic and culturally engaging.
LANDSCAPE = SET OF MANY PARTS
To create a successful public space the design uses a heurestic model of four primary considerations: public art, comprehensive edges, relevant programming, and flexible spaces to accomodate periodic and chaotic events. These form the fundamental devices of Variable Plaza, which are supplemented with other features.
(From competitor's text)
KG: An interesting and unique design that demonstrates an understanding of the changing context around the site and takes into consideration the development which will be taking place according to the Master Plan for this area. The media wall on the underside of the ramp has an alphaville nighttime presence that none of the other designs possess while making a feature out of infrastructure is a great idea.
PH: A sophisticated design that is a good representation of all the levels of thinking and all the potential uses of the site. The treatment of the ground plane, with a balance between planted and hard surfaces, gives the Waterfront neighbourhood a plane that unites it from one end to another. The preservation of the existing trees on the site was a great idea.
