Description

ASCENSION
The rise to glory

The 6300 seat Pan American Pavilion in Toronto, Canada will host the awards ceremonies during the 2015 Pan Am Games. It will also host a wide range of entertainment events during and after the game. Located on the Lake Ontario Waterfront east of downtown, the Pavilion will be gateway to downtown for travelers from the east as it is the first significant part of Toronto. The design of the pavilion focuses on site circulation, the connection to the waterfront district, the surrounding views of the harbour and downtown; as well as integration of the morals of the games.

The site is dominated in by a vinyl cased arch pulled upward by tension cables. Highlighted in Orange, one of the colors of the games, it brings liveliness to the surrounding locale. A vinyl fabric shades the stage as well with incredible efficiency. A second smaller structure juxtaposes the main structure in form, function, material and appearance. The backstage was designed with circulation, a predominate form generator, along with the goal of net zero energy use in a rough climate. The majority of the building is underground. This is where all the services and functions of the backstage occur. The above floor is simply an intermediary transition between the entrance and the seating. Here, indoor ticket services and concessions are located. To the left and right and ramps the curved around into the sides of the seating area. From here, the patrons can go forward, back or across to their seats as well as back toward the open lawn seating.
