The Vinyl Space Frame
Floating Fields is an experiment in how automated scripting devices such as Voronoi can be utilized to meet expansive programmatic requirements. The development of the geometry seeks first to address the developing urban condition to the west. The tectonic vinyl surfacing becomes, itself, a gestural force on the site, opens up to the urban condition, inviting both guests and residents into its expanse. To the busy streets to the Northeast, the structure presents a barrier to visual and audible disturbance.
Rather than fixate on seating methodologies, the occupancy concerns were addressed by encouraging spontaneous self-organization on the site. Much like Frank Ghery's Pritzker pavilion in Chicago, the general seating opens up into a spacious, gently sloping lawn. The lawn generates a micro/macro relationship with surrounding landscaping elements, ensuring that the site retains park-like elements for both leisure and relaxation.
Further, a large and simplistic stage ensures that event organizers will be able to develop, via second and third party deployable, a variety of events for the space. The stage is envisioned as an open space that would facilitate the incorporation of modular adaptation. The space would be able to facilitate everything from small ceremonies to large scale musical performances. On the exterior, the surface is carefully manipulated to produce micro-functions, such as covered seating, or habitable space. Further, the openness of the structural system would enable future expansion as massing elements can begin to inhabit that system.
Finally, a standardized vinyl paneling system was devised to both reduce costs and promote sustainability while maximising the morphological advantages of the vinyl itself. In this case, the panel has been engineered in such a way as to maximise light penetration while negating, entirely, water penetration. The sloped surfaces are carefully adjusted so that, as water follows the path of least resistance, it is distributes across the paneling system. Furthermore, polycarbonate panels can be arrayed and deployed in a variety of opacities and colors. The vinyl paneling system would have the capacity to change gradually in transparency, or explore a number of graphic possibilities by altering panel coloration.
