This concept maintains traffic capacity while affordably enhancing connectivity. The viaducts are re-purposed, the Dunsmuir for cars and commuter cyclists, the Georgia for pedestrians and recreational cyclists. Connecting directly to Vancouver's main ceremonial route, the Georgia Greenway's design improves on the Highline and the Promenade Plantee, by providing dedicated spaces for vendors, artists and buskers. A new eastern plaza provides improved connections to downtown, Chinatown and the False Creek Flats.
Re-purpose the Dunsmuir Viaduct as a two way vehicular connector. The commuter bike-way is relocated from the road surface to a new separated bike-way structure, attached to the north side of the viaduct, and the structure is modestly widened, to accommodate two travel lanes in each direction. This reduces total eastbound capacity of the viaducts from 3 vehicle lanes to 2, while maintaining the current westbound capacity of 2 vehicle lanes. A short new viaduct segment carries eastbound traffic from the Georgia Viaduct to a new signalized intersection with the Dunsmuir Viaduct, just east of Rogers Arena.
Re-purpose the Georgia Viaduct as a walkway and recreational cycling route, with a design similar to New York City's Highline Park or Paris's Promenade Plantee. In addition to planting areas, water features and viewing points, the well ¬landscaped Georgia Greenway provides dedicated spaces for food and craft vendors, artists and buskers. At the west end of the Greenway, the Georgia Steps connect Georgia Street, Vancouver's main ceremonial route, to Pacific Boulevard and False Creek. At the east end of the Greenway, a new pedestrian plaza provides a separate route for pedestrians and cyclists, giving them priority over vehicular traffic.
East of Rogers Arena, short widenings to the Dunsmuir Viaduct allow pullout areas and vehicle access to two prime development sites at the viaduct level. Since they enhance the accessibility and value of these sites, developers will construct these features at their own expense. Just west of Gore Street, a new four-way intersection is established at grade-level. A new road leads south from this point, providing a new principal access point to the False Creek Flats. For pedestrians and cyclists, the new plaza above the intersection provides strong visual connections between downtown, Chinatown, the False Creek Flats and Main Street.
