The urban outdoor public pool is a node that sparks play, fitness, and communal well-being. The elevated concrete structures of the viaducts are a unique resource, and they may be creatively re-purposed to create such a node in downtown Vancouver. Let's pool our resource.
An urban outdoor public pool is many things, and all of those things reflect its context. It is a place of calm, where one can regain focus. It is a space for play, allowing for activity that would be frowned upon elsewhere. Il is a barometer of the seasons (and the hardiness of its patrons) as it registers the ebb and flow of users alongside the rising and falling of the outdoor temperature.
An outdoor public pool is all of these things and more: it is a nexus of community in the City. A dense urban core requires community to be created and for it to thrive. The repurposing of the viaducts is an opportunity to create something that would foster this community. The viaducts are opportune resources that may be exploited to better our
City. Let's pool our resources.
The concrete structure of the viaducts provide an excellent base for elevated outdoor pools. Adapting the pool form to the linear thrust of the viaducts creates opportunities for bathers to pair their swimming with urban encounters. A swim along the length of the pool is a trip in the city, with views to pedestrians and traffic below, and the city skyline above. Raft structures and boardwalks cater to strollers, loungers and sunbathers, allowing for moments of calm and reflection in the centre of the city.
