V Street transforms a relic of single purpose infrastructure into a hub of clean district energy, easy mobility, urban agriculture and public life. This innovative plan improves local air quality and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It connects neighbourhoods and builds small businesses. It also injects a dose of fun into the heart of the city.
The design challenge: transform a band of problematic Vancouver infrastructure into a hub of green energy, easy mobility, urban agriculture and public life—at no net cost to the city.
The Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts present an opportunity to showcase Vancouver's innovative approach to sustainable urbanism. V-Street transforms the dead surface into the city's next great public space, with a civic plaza, linear park and a swimming pool in the sky linked by walking and cycling routes. A district energy system provides low-carbon, low-cost energy to neighbourhoods in all directions—and heats the pool. On the ground, new and vibrant streetscapes offer space for small business and artists while connecting Chinatown to False Creek. Market office, retail and housing offset construction and operating costs, enabling mixed social housing.
Energy, neighbourhoods, mobility, innovation and fun: V Street connects them all.
