Description

The proposed design for Borden Park Paviilon rests in harmony with its landscape and its neighbours. It creates an inviting sense of warmth, security, playfulness, and welcome, and utilises efficient passive and sustainable systems to provide on long living and memorable environmental experience.

The fundamental design concept, from which the design solution grew, was founded on three key statements.

1.THE OBJECT AS BEACON
A sign of warmth and security emanating through the tree line, it has a presence and a purpose even from a distance - no matter the season.

2.A BOX WITHOUT WALLS = EXPRESSION OF LID
The other buildings of Borden present the box. This new building shall be an open box. An invitation - not a series of four solid walls. As such the most interesting and special feature of this box then becomes a celebration of the lid.

3.THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND
A place to explore, an interactive built environment where you pass through shifting layers and levels rather than a single solid shell. Through engagement with the structure a sense of child-like exploration comes to mind in the occupant.

With the design solution acting as a beacon the building has a presence across the park day and night - winter and summer. It discourages vandalism, vagrants and criminal activities by projecting a sense of activity. For the public it creates a gathering point. Much like a campfire at a campsite, it's inviting, safe and secure. The building opens outwards on all sides providing no back alleys or dark corners to hide in.
The proposed design compliments the existing and remaining structures on the site, as a rectilinear object of similar form and proportion. However the Pavilion is welcoming, not excluding the occupants of the parkscape. As a box without walls it is transparent, permeable and accessible, whilst being energy efficient with sensible use of glazing and insulation for thermal efficiency. The sharp corners of brick are replaced by shifting layers as the walls are diffused through dual skins. This leaves the main canopy to encompass the building form defining its overall geometry and presence on the site. It creates a strong border and framework for the activities within.

By embodying a sense of adventure into the building it goes beyond the fundamentals of its brief as provision of food and shelter. More than a mere convenience, the sense of fun and exploration begins to create a destination. As the warm welcoming heart of the park, it provides the hub for family and sports activities to circulate. It forms an atmosphere for children to discover by providing alternate non direct routes, shifting between walls and columns, alternating heights, a multiple of uniquely framed views particular to any occupant - of any age - at any location. Slices in the walls hint and reveal new aspects of the park around it, along with playful building forms and rays of sun through filtered green glass.

It is to be the sort of space that remains from the memories of childhood for years there onward; they look back remembering those family days in the playground.
