Description

The site is a historical park in Edmonton and has landscape architecture design strategies that evoke images of the City Beautiful movement, the Picturesque and Garden City movements. That being said, the specific site for the pavilion does not exhibit any particular sense of hierarchy in terms of approach, access or entry. This means the pavilion needs to be approachable from all sides, is porous in all access directions, and needs to define key interior and exterior spaces for occupation.

There is an existing architectural language in the park that has been used for many of the existing pavilion buildings. This typology can be characterized as structures that use masonry cladding (generally the masonry is a grounding element in the designs), incorporate wood (often in the roof framing), and high level glazing (presumably to admit light without compromising security or privacy). The project should respect and honour these past initiatives without being imitative, while presenting an architecture that is relevant and reflective of Edmonton's culture and aspirations. In this way, the pavilion will be integrated into the cultural landscape through an appropriate exploration of existing building types and material palettes.

The site has a well defined context and is well used for other activities and festivities. The park is active throughout all times of the year. The pavilion should celebrate all four seasons in Edmonton and celebrate the types of outdoor occupation these seasons sponsor.

In the proposed design three separate design languages come together in a synergistic manner to define an ecology of spaces which are tuned to provide key spaces of occupation in ail seasons of the Edmonton climate.

Referencing the existing building typologies and material palettes in the park, the proposed design incorporates brick, wood and glass in the design.

Firstly, a brick topography defines an interconnected series of spaces, extending through the building enclosure, and offering a diverse spectrum of formal and informal spaces. Secondly, a wood roof plane bends and folds in response to environmental conditions (deflecting northwesterly winds, augmenting solar gain while maximizing natural daylighting, and working in unison with the brick topography to establish the multiple domains of occupation). Thirdly, indigenous landscaping is used to augment the existing low shrubs and tree compliment, and define both formal and informal planted edges that also play a key role in exterior spatial definition and climate modulation.
