Description

The Borden Park Pavilion occupies a unique site within the park. If is located at the end of the promenade and next to the proposed entry feature focal point. Because of the contextual elements of the historic park, the design goal is to create a functional and pleasant building without ostentation.

The Pavilion reflects a design that revitalizes and respects Edmonton's history. The new structure is planned on land designated as park for more than 100 years with some structures dating back to sometime in the 1950s so the language of the new building follows geometry and materials present on the existing park buildings while creating a facility with a minimal ecological footprint.

The new flexible structure is a deeply environmentally sustainable building. The building goes beyond LEED by following the Passivehaus standard while staying in agreement with the Edmonton's River Valley and Ecovision guidelines and the Borden Park revitalization plan.

The design of the new building keeps some of the conventional iconography found in the park. The proposed building, as a whole, remains non monumental to create the human scale of intimacy demanded by its surrounding. The building acts as both a gateway and a place to rest, without becoming an obstacle to the significant pedestrian flows and views in their vicinity.

Its simple form is derived from energy, structural, functionality, cost and view analysis to ensure a beautiful and practical building.

The pavilion is set with the primary social objective to provide a long-term, high-quality and low management and maintenance facility for years to come for local residents and visitors to the area.

The first step on the design was to create a coordinated physical plan by separating some of interior spaces and linked them to exterior landscape features (existing or proposed) to harness the site into a harmonious whole. The play between mass and transparent spaces allows the building to oscillate between the inside and outside given the climatic conditions during the year.

Internal spaces are carefully defined into two distinctive functional zones; concession/ seating zone and washroom zone. The seating area and washroom can operate as a whole or they can be separated depending on the hours of operation.

The building will face south towards the proposed entry feature focal point where an outdoor seating area is proposed as part of the landscape. The building fosters an image of strength and it is balanced by external open spaces and welcoming entry points, which create an environment of openness and welcome.
