The New Vancouver Art Gallery as a means of Vitalizing the Georgia Viaducts and its surrounding Area
Wild Card: The New Vancouver Art Gallery as a means of Vitalizing the Georgia Viaducts and its Surrounding Area Rather than viewing the Georgia Viaducts as a scar on the city, the proposal seeks to celebrate the unique urban character of the Georgia Viaducts and the surrounding context. Curving viaducts, snaking sky train rails, disappearing alleyways, abrupt elevation changes; this proposal draws on of all of these qualities in its design in an attempt to make sense of this unique urban context. Building the new VAG between the viaducts with an adjoining public square could transform this area from a disregarded district into an exciting public and cultural zone.
The proposal has two objectives, first to transform the Georgia Viaducts and its surrounding area and second, to connect two public realms in the city, the False Creek waterfront and the downtown core. The first objective is addressed by positioning the proposed new Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) between the Georgia Viaducts. Rather than viewing the Georgia Viaducts as a scar on the city, the proposal seeks to celebrate the unique urban character of the Georgia Viaducts and the surrounding context. Curving viaducts, snaking sky train rails, disappearing alleyways, abrupt elevation changes; the proposal draws on of all of these qualities in its design in an attempt to make sense of this unique urban context. Building the new VAG in this location could transform the area from a disregarded district into an exciting public and cultural zone.
The second objective, to connect the False creek waterfront with the downtown core, responds to the observation that these two areas, separated by a 12 meter elevation change, lack a clear means for pedestrians to move from one level to the other. The design proposes connecting False Creek pedestrian traffic to a site on Georgia and Cambie St. with an elevated "Art Wa1k". The vacant block on Georgia and Cambie would be used for an underground Art Vault and for a Public Square on grade, framed by commercial and annex gallery space. The scheme establishes a programmatic connection between the two sites, reinforcing this area of the city as a burgeoning cultural district.
