The Exterior - 1:1000
We imagine a volume clearly visible from Papineau Avenue, welcoming like a large courtyard on the scale of the SMEC. The main entrance to the site, adjacent to the parking lot, offers a generous and unifying square, the "PLAZA". This urban space, incorporating the "sculpted mound" as natural bleachers, offers a place conducive to gatherings of enthusiastic supporters. The bleachers, the forecourt and the courtyard are all arranged and planned in such a way as to offer the possibility of sports projections on the wall of the main hall. It is already foreseeable that the passionate fans of the big events will come to this place and celebrate the victory of the champions.
The volumetry is structured by the axes of views and the points of interest and contacts bordering the building, so as to integrate the user into the whole place and thus provoke a potential of discovery that goes beyond the sports vocation of the projected equipment. In the northeast part of the building, in continuity with the Plazza, an observation point is planned for the visitors of the SMEC. Taking advantage of a privileged location, this space proposes a loggia on the park, accessible from an external staircase and located more than 5 meters above the ground. This unobstructed view allows visitors to see the full extent of the site and to identify the strategic locations available to them. In the western part of the building, outdoor spaces form a hub of exchange. At the first floor level, player traffic, service areas and controlled access for emergency vehicles coexist without nuisance.
The main facade on Papineau Avenue suggests a surprising perspective from the sub-roof inside the complex in order to arouse the curiosity of the passer-by. Opening up to the community is imposed by the openness of the façade, creating a magnetic and accessible place. The mound, restructured to identify the accessible breakthroughs of the first floor while serving the evacuation of the occupants of the floor, provides an outdoor space that allows for breaks, visual contact with the outdoor bleachers and the affirmation of a meaningful place on the floor.
In plan, the polygon stretches to the south, marking the entrance while judiciously leaving room for the program on the east and west sides, protecting it from the rays of a low-angled sun, which would be a nuisance for the interior playing surface.
The interior - 1:500
We recommend an understanding of the intuitive places in continuity with the exterior circulations. In this sense, as soon as one enters the building through the main entrance to the south, the visitor immediately perceives the major programmatic components while observing the playground. Everywhere the circulation is fluid and proportional to the anticipated traffic.
The Entrails - 1:100
The structural materialization of the roof, a major element of the project, is presented as a large hybrid mesh, elegantly composed of main steel beams and tie rods, secondary wood beams and a metal deck. The dimensioning of these beams, varying according to the spans, will form the animated framework of the vault. With this structure, we propose an optimal clearance of the playing area, not only with regard to the requirements for the sport, but also for the integration of the air distribution elements without compromising the quality of the playing area.
The Reason - 1:1
The sustainable approach is defined first and foremost as a remarkable project that will stand the test of time through its authenticity, its belonging to the landscape and its appreciation by the community. A collective legacy that persists through the decades is a prerequisite for what is now called sustainable development. In addition to most of the usual strategies of sustainable approach that we regularly use, for this project we anticipate some distinctive approaches.
