The Castle Downs Pavilion provides for a community space which also becomes a centre for recreational sports in north Edmonton. The solid base of the facility features the prominent storage areas. These sit on the ground beneath the large glue laminated wood roof, which serves as a beacon in a size appropriate to its context and views from the adjacent thoroughfares. This roof defines the exterior spaces and creates various community nodes around the building and shelters users from the elements. The upper level contains public and community focused components in a Iight filled space. The terrace on the second floor allows spectators of cricket, soccer and football views which are unmatched in the city for recreational sports. The ramp pulls visitors off of the ground plane and leads them up to the second floor and forms an integral element of the procession through the park and towards the views of Castle Downs Park.
The Castle Downs District Park pavilion is satisfies the Edmonton Design Committee principles by being a sustainable building that is well integrated into both the Castle Downs neighbourhood and the wider city contexts. The building will act as a platform and a lounge for the neighbouring parks and communities, and will tie into the existing multi use trails and provide a rest stop and parking area for cyclists, skiers, pedestrians and joggers. The Castle Downs District Park pavilion will create a community gathering space for the residents of north Edmonton.
The form of the building provides an active public face to the trails through the park and helps to define them. In using native vegetation that harbours urban wildlife, and taking advantage of the changes in sun position and prevailing wind direction, the design is responsive to and embraces the differences in seasons. The terrace will create enhanced opportunities for arts and cultural performances.
The unique organic form of the Castle Downs District Park pavilion follows in the tradition of Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre in enhancing Edmonton's recreational areas with an innovative forward looking design. The glue laminated structure provides an efficient structure that will use otherwise left over material to create an interesting form using state of the art production techniques.
