A community friendly and flexible pavilion, a post-post modern approach
An archetypal, timeless pyramid structure with adaptable, flexible features encompasses our approach to a community friendly, sustainable, and flexible design. Providing an efficient, usable space that can react to the diverse, vibrant community and grow into a destination point while providing educational and maintenance volunteering opportunities for the community. The exterior pyramid shell creates four ambiguous hill sized planes that can be climbed and inhabited lending a sense of ownership and inclusiveness to the building. The top portion of the pyramid will be restricted from climbing and feature a dramatic light-well, natural ventilation, and the possibility of energy collection through solar panels. Pathways filter from the fields into the pavilion with a gradation of amenities along the way. Outdoor lighting, water fountains, benches, tables, bbq pits, and cano pies service outdoor meetings. The entrances to the pyramid create four outdoor quadrants that will be partially canopied based on wind direction and sunlight with woven fence like cables. These planar grids can be woven with bright re-used plastics acting as transient installations, permanent commissions, or community art competitions. Community engagement, creating a sense of ownership and territoriality, as weil as integrated learning can also be facilitated through the study of the energy efficient building strategies used in the pavilion (outlined later in the document). The PassivHaus building approach, ornamental food production, water conservation, and renewable energy sources in conjunction with the panels offer numerous opportunities to engage with the pavilion. This blend of archetypal and transitional forms, program, and aesthetics as weil as sustainable ideals attempts to transcend postmodern irony. Offering an optimistic yet rational structure, the pavilion tries to reflect modern struggles of knowingness and naivety, universal truths and relativism, and empiricallogic with the unknown of the human story.
