The atmosphere of Millwoods park is directly linked to its activities. Uses of this neighborhood public space define the perception of the place. The proposed project celebrates these everyday activities with an approach based on the informai paths already present on the site. While the new building's volumes affirm their presence, thereby challenging the overall horizontality of the site, the park's activities remain at the forefront.
PATHS is about creating a meeting point in the middle of Millwoods Sports Park, the new pavilion forming / providing an anchor in the landscape. Paths -both formai and informai? --form and structure generous exterior extensions that generate spaces of convergence for after-game meetings, season ending parties, art integration program and special events (such as an ice bar in the winter, for instance).
Paths are inscribed on the site and in the ground. They create a new perceptual dynamic for the park by underlining and defining its boundaries. They in turn form user-friendly exterior spaces, and favor natural daylighting and ventilation through interstices in the building. The solution is innovative in the way program elements are grouped in the pavilion, giving possibilities for construction in phases. More importantly, this organization allows different mechanical responses for different needs, thereby offering a high performance energy-saving building.
