The area of Langelier Station is surrounded by asphalt and wall; atmosphere is dull and unattractive for spending time at the site. The idea is to make site more attractive with water and wind elements.
Self-sufficient water circle is incorporated on the site using all of the given spatial characteristics as nearby wall and sidewalk. Water and wind features create sensorial atmosphere by visual, sound and touch effects while at the same time have positive effects on microclimatic condition with cooling and cleaning the air, contributing to reduction of urban heat island effect. They also provide interactive experience for all ages, especially for children.
The variety of water features offers different experiences of place and time throughout different periods of time. Wind feature is presented by windmills. During the warm part of the year there is mini platform with water mirror and water jets, water pipes with water showers from pipes between the bus shelter and parallel aluminum vertical water wall, as well as water feature sprinkling over windmills. All the water features are connected into larger water surface and underground reservoir, with stepping stones that surrounds bus shelter.
The water falling off the pipes is provided by collected rainwater pumped by electric pump, effect by water jets and water sprinkling over the windmills, which can be achieved only by engaging in physical activities providing sustainable energy by spinning larger windmill outside or climbing a stepper inside bus shelter. In the wintertime there is no water in the water system of the bus station. Nearby perforated wall without water is also used as a mirror and in the night time is cover with lights. Mini platform covered with water jets is at the night time also covered with ground lights.
Falling water not only creates visual and sound effects but it also irrigates plants, provokes play, social interaction and reduces noise and pollution.
(Competitor's text)
For this site that received the most proposals, the deliberations of the jury were more difficult. This project has emerged as the most elegant in its design and presentation. Municipal water management is a real problem with considerable environmental implications and it is the only proposal that has chosen to integrate this issue into the bus stop. The proposal is very elaborate and presents itself as a series of systems that illustrate and implement devices for water reuse, energy production in a composition representing the water cycle. The microcosm of the bus shelter is then transformed into a true macrocosm. This project is paradoxically as minimalist as it is didactic.
