I propose a new model for a sustainable home in Vancouver.
The house is small, simple in forms and material palette to make the house affordable, sustainable, energy efficient. At the same time, the house responds to local context and climate with the use of locally manufactured concrete masonry block, reclaimed Douglas?fir wood slats and many sustainable strategies including solar panels, geothermal heating, radiant floor, passive cooling, green roof, living wall and permeable paving.
Concrete block is the main architectural and structural element in this house.
It is a popular building material to build warehouses and industrial buildings. But it has many advantages to be used in home construction. First of all, It is readily available and locally manufactured not only in Vancouver but in entire North America. It is very durable and long lasting so minimum maintenance is required throughout the life of the house. Also concrete block provide thermal mass to maintain uniform temperatures inside and contain no VOC content. Lastly it is completely recyclable.
Its finish is unsightly and has cold, utilitarian look in CMU only interiors. But locally manufactured and reclaimed Douglas?fir wood slats are used throughout the house in ceilings, floors, doors and louvers to offset and counter?balance. Together they give an attractive and neutral hue to the house in keeping with its earthy aesthetic. In living room, the view of the bamboo trees through the large glass opening in the north wall add color to the interior and allow home's occupant inside the house establish contact with nature throughout the year.
This is a small house but the floor plan is an exploration of positive and negative space with each space having access to the outdoor space and the garden. This is one of the advantages of living in a small house. It's easy to be in contact with nature and have relationships. I believe that's the most important element of a sustainable home.
