LifePanel is a modular, structural panel system that introduces a new paradigm of home ownership. It is an envelope-encompassing building component that provides a consistent component language, where minor panel variations allow the self-supporting structural panels to be used as floors, walls or roof planes. With a flexible, interchangeable infill panel that maintains envelope performance through a simple clip detail system, LifePanel is a building product that is not only efficient in material use, but provides a singular building component that homeowners can use throughout their life. By sitting lightly on interlocking foundation piers, the clip-together wall system can start life as a small single person living unit, grow in size with ease as that resident's life changes, and contract again as needed by adding or removing panels. The convenience of assembly and disassembly allows the house to be rapidly relocated to alternative sites, or simply sold as building blocks for other LifePanel homes.
This integrated building system further responds to the 100mile challenge by investigating the potential for new industries based on local rapidly renewable resources, manufacturing and recyclable waste available in British Columbia. LifePanel proposes a system that encourages a new market for entrepreneurs to aid in creating a sustainable local economy, lessening our dependence on industrially produced materials and natural resources that are energy and carbon intensive to process. In this regard, our submission utilizes available local materials and products, and new materials currently in development or proposed for the future in BC.
