Open Sky House
Volumes
This house was conceived as an atomized living unit, on the edge of public space and the private. The volumes were designed as an independent entity that also can be built according to different stages and necessities.
Umbrella Roof
Covering that exterior corridor which connects the volumes when it is needed, capturing at the same time the rain water and keeping it in underground containers for later uses.
Eco - Systems
Thermal Chimney: Regulate the internal temperature by heating the roof by the natural sunlight, acting as a natural suction of the internal hot air from the unit, and permitting the ingression of fresh air in the room during the summer.
Trombe Wall: This low-tech system consist on a glass tank that covers a portion of the façade, oriented according to the sun, the sun heats the air inside this tank, it can regulate the internal temperature by moving simple dampers
Garden Roof, witch absorbs the direct sunlight and serves as an effective isolation system and internal temperature regulator.
Materials
The materials used during the design processes, were taking into account because the proximity to Vancouver, and also because those are natural and renewal resource: stones, wood, and glass. The stones were used to create a basement, letting the air flow underneath the house by small channels through the floor. The wood for almost everything else: walls, doors, frames, roofs, etc. And the glass used as little as possible and protecting it from the direct insolation.
