Project number 24024

The jury perceived this project as the product of a learned architecture that expresses the noble character of a cultural institution. The main functions are articulated around the central hall from which they are easily perceived visually. The auxiliary services are planned with remarkable skill and the links between the various functions respond very well to the program data. The development of the old quay and the Estèbe house, as well as the links between the latter and the Marine Institute, are particularly well done. The same is true for the integration of the works of art, which are in harmony with the theme of the Museum.

The treatment of the volumes shows a great deal of mastery in their organization and the search for rhythm and relationships between full and empty spaces. The facades are varied, animated by the play of light and shadow, and are particularly interesting for the pedestrian. The division of the volumes by inclined sides marks a desire to reduce their mass for a better integration into the surrounding urban fabric.

The large oblique axis in the perspective of the Estèbe house and the river seems arbitrary and not very consistent with the urban grid and the orthogonal grid of the building itself. The visual corridor to the river is restricted by the siting of the buildings that are proposed for the second phase.

The building is on the whole well planned, its volumes are well balanced, but it remains imposing by its mass and its monumental character. In spite of an obvious search for harmony with the surrounding buildings, the architectural vocabulary is international and does not fit well with that of Old Quebec.
