The Monument
The monument is reached through the "Gate of Harmony", two stainless steel columns hung with bells that ring in the wind. The bells on one side of the gate are calibrated to eastern tonality, the others to western. Their light, harmonious murmur grows in intensity as the wind strengthens. The gate is guarded by the figures of two kneeling sentries, shown confident, alert and ready to act. Through the gates lies a circular oasis surrounded by trees and secured by three large bronze figures. One figure, standing apart from the others in a pose implying the isolation of those who serve in foreign lands, is shown keeping watch. His companions, a man and woman, stand somewhat apart, looking towards the Parliament for their symbolic direction. Their closeness to each other suggests mutual support, confidence and companionship. Towards the center of this circular area stands the Tree of Conciliation, an age-old symbol of stability, rejuvenation and meeting. Beneath the tree, children are shown in the joyous play of freedom and security. The tree is made of powerful stainless steel, symbolic of permanence and strength. It supports an ethereal foliage of etched glass - representing the fragility and beauty of peace.
The Setting
The site of the monument is busy and visually disruptive, and the design must incorporate elements of cohesiveness and tranquility. Thus, a Peace Precinct has been established, consisting of a circular oasis surrounded by two rows of sentinel-like trees. Secondary sites around the monument are used as "conflict areas" to provide a meaningful and dramatic setting for the central precinct. The peripheral area, with fountain, is set with broken granite blocks carved in rough relief to show the destructiveness of war. These areas contrast symbolically with the Peace Precinct where children, protected by the peacekeeping soldiers, play under the Tree of Conciliation. The contrast implies a movement from violence and destruction towards an idea of peace achieved not trough bloodshed, but through negotiation and settlement.
