The Monument
The monument consists of two elements - a vertical tower visible from a great distance, and a more intimate space at the foot of the tower, visible only to those who approach the monument closely. Three bold, abstract forms fashioned out of stainless steel and symbolizing the three branches of the peacekeeping forces, rise 20 metres above the ground. The figures are firmly rooted, symbolizing their strong connection with the Canadian land, while the identity and harmonious relationship of the figures symbolize the strength of united action. The overall upward thrust of the group leads the eye upwards to a flight of blue birds - symbolic of peace. The second part of the monument presents a more literal message in the form of actual weapons. They are shown "neutralized", transformed by the blue colour of the United Nations and locked under a glass pyramid at the foot of the central tower. These useless weapons indicate that while war as a part of our history can never be forgotten, it can be defeated by peace. At the centre of the monument are inscribed messages from those leaders who urge humanity to put aside its weapons and fight for peace.
The Setting
The site opens principally to Sussex Drive with, however, good access and visibility from the National Gallery of Canada, from Major's Hill Park, and from Confederation Boulevard to the west. Because of the dense traffic circulating around the monument, it is important to limit the space in order to create a mood of sheltered peacefulness. This is accomplished with low walls and groups of small trees.
