Architectural Strategy
Volume of Possibilities
Extrude to the limits of the project site and the forms of the neighbouring buildings, with the volume of possibilities corresponding to the maximum surface area which the project may occupy, while respecting regulatory constraints and the general context. Generate a matrix, resulting from the geometry of lots occupied by existing structures - Maison Pierre du Calvet and its Annexe, the Maison Louis-Viger - which delineates the volume of possibilites, frames the heritage buildings, and introduces the proportions of the project's components: elements at a human scale which comprise the playground of the PHI Contemporary.
Contemporary Patrimony
Celebrate the buildings and their respective construction techniques, emblematic and contemporary in their day: innovations in fire protection during the 18th century French Regime - Maison Pierre du Calvet; the cut stone facade from the 19th century British era - Magasin Davies; public use of the flat roof structure characteristic of late 19th century urban densification - Annexe, Maison Pierre du Calvet. Distinguish the important heritage buildings by demolishing secondary constructions, found in the heart of the lot, and stylistic restorations of late 20th century buildings whose patrimonial interest is limited.
Programs
Distribute the programs throughout cells of the matrix: spaces of creation, presentation, contemplation; and voids which generate a porous site, spaces for circulation, and light.
Itinerary Experience
Bring the city's public ground into the site, up into the building, where it infiltrates the programs and punctuates informal meeting places, producing flexible and open programming which the visitor may appropriate, outside the established program.
Exterior Infrastructures
Imagine a network of structured and lively exterior spaces where programming unfolds in the form of installations, performances, and events, as well as green spaces located on terraces at different levels - in the heart of a mineralised urban island - facing the city or open to the river.
