PALIMPSEST
"Architecture is space, a work of art, a way of looking".
- Dan Hanganu
"The project is not formal, but 'processual', that is to say, it does not seek to achieve a 'composed' form from which nothing can be subtracted or added, but a form that we would call 'open' ... a process that would lead to the discovery of initially unforeseeable situations..."
- Bruno Marchand
A PARK OF INTERACTIONS
We have entitled the project "Palimpsest." Like an erased manuscript on which one intervenes anew, the park has been rethought, rewritten, while retaining a trace of its past layout. This new space to explore is also, once again, marked and invested by so many circulations and passages of visitors and city dwellers. Thin layers of experience are superimposed, like a reinvented history, against a backdrop of homage to the memory of Dan Hanganu.
This tribute is reflected in the park's design. Redesigned as a space to explore that engages the body and mind, it echoes the notion of the journey that has marked Dan Hanganu's work. The use of red, the architect's signature color, and the triangle, his fetish shape, are references to the formal language of this great designer.
As in many of Dan Hanganu's projects, our proposal aims to create a coherent network of connective spaces that will enable encounters and interactions. We propose a series of spaces, places of passage, play and relaxation, all with porosities allowing citizens to meet, thus reinforcing the current role of Dan Hanganu Park (Elgar) as a place of sociability on a local urban scale. The park is intended to be symbolic. The commemoration of this great man and architect is above all in the spirit that emerges, through materials, shapes, colors and waves. Space, art and the eye will be the integrating elements, as will the link with the commemoration. The spirit of freedom, inherent (or almost inherent) in nature, is combined with the present in the life and work of Dan Hanganu.
A TRIBUTE TO SPACE, ART AND GAZE
At once exuberant and rational, massive and light, the elements used for the layout feature key materials used by the architect, notably stone and perforated metal, fetish shapes (the triangle declined in several ways), the color red (a deviation, perhaps, from the Bucharest school of architecture...) and natural and artificial light.
Throughout the park, like a palimpsest unrolled to reveal its surprises, are sensitive installations evoking themes dear to Hanganu. Designed for the community, they echo an architecture that does good, in the service of citizens.

Proposal 970CA was one of the most successful entries at this stage of the competition.
Quality of purpose
The vision of the development project demonstrates a fine sensitivity to the context. The thread running through the entire park is clear and well developed. The message is rich in both form and content.
Dan Hanganu's memory is part of the playful aspect of the game and the route, which appealed to the jury. The commemoration is sensitive, attractive and harmoniously echoes the architect's work, through shapes, materials and colors.
Social quality and identity
The play area is at the heart of the project, and the spirit of togetherness is strongly expressed in the proposal. Anchoring to the neighborhood is well defined (main entrance thresholds) and secondary accesses, notably to the schoolyard, the Domaine St-Paul woodland and Place de l'Unité, are well resolved.
Formal and landscape quality
The green character of the proposal is emphasized. The view from inside the library shows great sensitivity to formal and landscape quality. However, the path network proposed in the eastern section could be more coherent in terms of layout and range of paths.
Functional quality
The play area with modules is judiciously circumscribed by the existing riprap and commemorative furniture (signature fences), while remaining sufficiently permeable to the rest of the site.
The team's decision to propose organic paths that take into account the presence of trees seems a good avenue, but the legibility of the space is somewhat affected. The paths would benefit from a better hierarchy. The jury also questions the relevance of having so many paths, especially in the picnic area. Moreover, the picnic area seems less mastered and developed than the rest of the proposal.
Environmental quality and greening
Generally speaking, the jury appreciated the fact that, in terms of the program and structuring of the space, the proposal clearly builds on existing conditions and elements. The proposal takes account of the site's constraints and respects the borough's desire to intervene little in terms of soil, existing trees and private land.
The jury underlines the efforts made in terms of vegetation, in particular the woodland that extends into the free play area, the emphasis placed on biodiversity and the work on plant strata. However, ease of maintenance will have to be demonstrated, given the borough's limited resources.
