THANK YOU FOR STROLLING
What if "Reimagining the Shopping Street" of Notre-Dame meant reconnecting with the Lachine village spirit, redefining the relationship with time, and occupying the shopping forecourt in a different way?
For over a century, the Dominium Bridge Company was the driving force behind economic growth in Lachine. Here, we propose unveiling this industrial past to "build bridges" between residents and their living environment. This invitation to connect encourages water to flow under the bridges, with a view to supplying rainwater to appliances in buildings along the street. The new bridges will be used to stroll from one bank to the other, rediscovering the area and each store. Taking one's time will multiply moments of encounter.
To achieve this, we've redesigned the traffic flow to revitalize the district by reclaiming public space and the shopping forecourt, inviting people to take their time. Whether it's to store, go to a terrace, stretch out in an urban hammock, watch an outdoor film, let the kids slide on the compacted snow in winter, or enjoy ephemeral art on the snow benches, the new watchword is: strolling.
The renaissance of Notre-Dame will take place on the shared lane, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to reach the market in a gentle village atmosphere. Between 6th and 18th avenues, a one-way street from west to east will be dedicated mainly to public transit and pedestrians; cars will be able to travel at speeds of 20km/h, thus promoting the "making of its bridges", between the various axes for strolling and shopping, tourism and meeting spaces on a daily basis and during events. This framework, where water can flow freely and bridges reinforce links, is punctuated by bike parks, bus stops, a few parking spaces for pick-up, and above all, spacious sidewalks.
The general configuration of the public space will be designed with nature in mind. The sidewalks will be bioretention basins and urban vegetable gardens, transforming the street into an oasis. In this natural setting, the reuse of materials from the old factory will sublimate the history of the emancipation of this district, breathing new life into its industrial metal through the creation of new urban amenities. The creation of a variety of furnishings will be fed by artists and local residents. These strolling areas will give way to spontaneity, allowing residents and shopkeepers to appropriate the space and imagine it together, both through the creation of artworks and street furniture, and through the redevelopment of the shopping forecourts.
"Building bridges" is the key to creating a warm, social and Brazilian atmosphere, where everyone will enjoy taking a breather, meeting up and sharing their neighborhood. Like a bridge across the street, artistic structures proposed for co-construction will be seen in the distance, acting as beacons.
We want to create a lasting street, where everyone is welcome to stroll.

+ GENERAL APPRECIATION
The "Thank You for Strolling" proposal by Zaraté + Lavigne Architectes and En temps et lieu stood out for its sobriety, overall quality and concept.
+ CONCEPTUAL QUALITY
Jury members appreciated the fact that the proposal placed the environment at the heart of its concept, notably with the development of a water management system. The proposal is highly accomplished. The designers have imagined Notre-Dame Street as a social space that citizens of all ages can make their own.
+ EXPERIENTIAL QUALITY AND ATTRACTIVENESS POTENTIAL
Jury members emphasized the iconographic quality of the proposal, with the integration of the symbol of bridges, both literally and figuratively, bringing back an architectural element. The bridges, also treated in a playful way on the promenade, offer the potential of an urban marker for Notre-Dame Street, setting it apart from other shopping streets. However, jury members pointed out that the overall view of the proposal was more difficult to understand.
+ QUALITY OF INTEGRATION AND FORMAL QUALITY
The proposal seems versatile, thanks in part to its simplicity, but also to the integration of different systems, such as water, in a non-didactic but visible way. Reminders of the neighborhood's industrial history were also appreciated.
+ FUNCTIONAL QUALITY
The proposal presents an accomplished master plan, with work on streets, parking, planting and water reclamation. This last point is perhaps covered in too much detail, but the attention to detail was highlighted by the jury members. The overall quality of the street furniture - the culverts and hammocks, in particular - and the programming aimed at different street users were also elements that helped the proposal stand out.
